About FILK

History

Historic Picture of the FILK-building in FreibergIn 1889 „Deutsche Gerberschule”
(„German Tanners´ School”) was founded at Freiberg. A few years later, in 1897, the „Deutsche Versuchsanstalt für Lederindustrie” („German Institution for Leather Industry”) was established. So Freiberg became the training centre for qualified employees in Germany, Europe and beyond.
Both institutions merged as „Deutsches Lederinstitut” („German Leather Institute”), from which „Forschungsinstitut für Leder- und Kunstledertechnologie” („Research Institute for Leather and Artificial Leather Technology”) originated.
In 1992 the foundation of the „Verein zur Förderung des Forschungsinstitutes für Leder- und Kunstledertechnologie (FILK) Freiberg/Sachsen e. V.” supporting association, as a partner, permitted a privatization of the institute, assuring the further existence of this research centre.

„Forschungsinstitut für Leder und Kunststoffbahnen” continues to be true to the tradition of research and development in the leather field, done at Freiberg for more than 100 year.
However, the business activities of FILK have been considerably extended since the middle of the sixties. Thus, now the institute sees itself as the leading branch institute in the plastic webs field. This is based on high specialist competence and scientific level, high flexibility and, last but not least, on a very good technical equipment in the plastic webs sector, being unique in Germany, we are sure. In 2001 this competence caused us to change the name of the institute to „Forschungsinstitut für Leder und Kunststoffbahnen” (FILK) („Research Institute for Leather and Plastic Sheets”).
