Division Leather/Biopolymers

Performance Profile

In the Leather/Biopolymers Division problems are solved for the following activities / main business fields:

Leather / Tannery / Top finish:
  • New, environmentally friendly liming processes
  • Use of vegetable tanning agents and dye stuffs
  • Recycling of process liquids and treatment of tannery waste water
  • Process control in leather manufacture by NIR spectroscopy
  • Development of efficient test methods to determine auxiliary and leather properties
  • Development of special leather types, e. g. orthopaedic leathers, low-emission leathers
  • Testing of new systems for the leather top finish (e. g. inorganic/organic hybride polymers, beam-curing products)
  • Leather defects (expert's reports, analytic)

Collagen / Biopolymers:
  • Extraction and modification of gelatines, collagen- und proteinhydrolysates
  • Analytics of gelatines and collagens
  • Product- and engineeringdevelopment of collagencontaining products
  • Thermo- and hydroplastically processing of collagen
  • Technology development of preparation collagencontaining raw materials
  • Development of analysis- und testing methods for collagen industry

Product- and engineering development for pre-competitional research is one of the main tasks of collagen laboratory. There are also offered commercial R&D-projects for companies fields.
Besides R&D-projects (german pages) various testing and technological services are provided by this division.

Semi-industrial tests for pre-competitional research are one of the main fields of the pilot-scale tannery. Commercial R&D projects for enterprises are fulfilled as well. I. a. the development of environmentally friendly leather manufacturing processes, practical investigation of defect causes, and consultancy on leather defects caused by process or raw stock as well as use and testing of vegetable tanning agents and natural dye stuffs for leather are among the major fields of work. Smallest amounts of leathers and single items produced for customers, who themselves collect the products made to order, are manufactured on request. The range of these leather types comprises, for instance:

  • vegetable-tanned rustic grain split made from bull hide
  • vegetable-tanned fine grain split made from bull hide
  • vegetable-tanned roller leather, wet-strained, made from calfskin
  • vegetable-tanned roller leather, piano type, made from calfskin
  • vegetable-tanned orthopaedic leather with untanned inner layer
  • parchment made from cattle hide
  • vegetable-tanned belt leather made from bull shoulders
  • smoked elk leather, combined smoke tannage, chrome-free
  • polishing leather

The pilot-scale shop fulfils jobs of PR, skill improvement and consultancy in the leather field. Together with German and foreign universities and technical colleges, it makes an important contribution to elaboration and tutoring (supervising) of graduating works of doctoral and diploma candidates. The pilot-scale tannery is also busy in leather archeology and history.

Freiberg Hide Powder is regarded as recognized standard absorbent for the quantitative determination of tannins in tanning materials and pharmaceutics world wide. The pilot-scale tannery produces Hide Powder and sells it. In the context of this activity, investigations and tests of tanning agents and other leathermaking auxiliaries are performed as well.
