Special Investigations

Overview test lab

Beside our large number of standardized tests here are some information about our further investigation methods of leather and plastics/polymers:
deutsch

Microscopy

Light microscopy, scientific photography

application: photographical documentation,
microscopical investigations of samples (surface, cross section, thin cuttings),
quantitative interpretation of images /statistics,
coating thickness measurements,
diagnostic of defects, process-related investigations
suitable materials:

all materials (leather, plastics, textiles,
compounds ...)

instruments: stereo microscope, incident light- and shining-through light microscope (LEICA), videoscope,
digital camera

Scanning electron microscopy  (SEM)

application: scanning electron microscopical investigation (resolution of 10 nm),
measurement of coating thickness,
diagnostics of defects,
process-related investigations
suitable materials: all materials, which have vacuum resistance or limited vapor pressure, also microscopical samples
instrument: modern SEM XL 30 ESEM (FEI Electron Optics)

Analytics and spectroscopy

Energy dispersive X-ray micro analyses (EDX)

application: Semi quantitative analysis of elements down to 0,1%,
analysis of surfaces / on cross-section,
local analysis down to 1 µm resolution
suitable materials: all materials, which have vacuum resistance or limited vapor pressure, also microscopical samples
instruments: on scanning electron microscope ESEM

Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS/ESCA)

application: Semiquantitative analysis of elements,
extremly surface sensitive analytical method (~ 5 nm),
informations about bonds
suitable materials: all high vacuum resistant materials
(favoring plastics, lesser leather)
instruments: SAGE 150 (SPECS)

FTIR-spectroscopy and -microscopy

application: Investigation of samples in infra red (2,5 µm to 25 µm),
identification of chemical groups, also on surfaces,
diagnostics of defects, also microscopic samples
suitable materials: solids, solutions, liquids
instruments: FT-IR-Spektrometer SPECTRUM 2000, Diamant-ATR, H-ATR (ZnSe, Ge)
