Our laboratory determines tensile properties according to DIN EN ISO 527-1 as an accredited test method. The standard specifies the general principles for tensile testing of plastics and plastic composites and forms the methodological basis of the DIN EN ISO 527 series. Under defined test conditions, the tensile deformation behaviour and stress-strain relationship of a material are investigated. Depending on the material, properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, yield and break characteristics, and various strain values can be determined.
The standard covers a broad range of rigid and semi-rigid thermoplastic and thermosetting plastics as well as filled and fibre-reinforced composites. The applicable specimen geometries and specific test conditions are defined in the subsequent parts of the standard series. For moulding and extrusion plastics, FILK performs testing according to DIN EN ISO 527-2 as an accredited test method.
Testing according to DIN EN ISO 527-1
In the tensile test, the specimen is clamped in a tensile testing machine and extended along its major principal axis at a defined test speed. Loading is continued until the specimen breaks or until a specified stress or strain value is reached. During the test, the applied force and the change in specimen length are recorded.
The measured data are used to determine the stress-strain curve. Depending on the material and the applicable part of the standard series, properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, yield stress, stress at break and strain values can be evaluated. Specimen geometry, gauge length, test speed and other specific conditions are defined in the relevant material-specific part of the DIN EN ISO 527 series.
Applications of the test
Tensile testing according to DIN EN ISO 527 is used for the fundamental mechanical characterization of plastics and plastic composites. It enables different materials, formulations and processing conditions to be compared and provides important properties for material development, material comparison and quality assurance.
For conventional moulding and extrusion plastics, DIN EN ISO 527-2 is particularly relevant. Films and thin sheets are tested according to DIN EN ISO 527-3. In addition, FILK can offer tensile testing of isotropic and orthotropic fibre-reinforced plastics according to DIN EN ISO 527-4 and of unidirectional fibre-reinforced plastics according to DIN EN ISO 527-5.
Related tests
The most important material-specific complement is the tensile test according to DIN EN ISO 527-2 for moulding and extrusion plastics. For films and sheets less than 1 mm thick, testing according to DIN EN ISO 527-3 is available. The flexural properties of plastics can additionally be determined according to DIN EN ISO 178, while fibre-reinforced plastics can be characterized in flexure according to DIN EN ISO 14125.
