FINAT FTM 10 Release force (Silicon labels)

FINAT FTM 10 - Quality of silicone coated substrates for self-adhesive laminates: release force

We perform testing in our laboratory according to FINAT FTM 10 for the determination of the release force of silicone-coated or otherwise release-coated materials used in self-adhesive laminates. The test is used to assess the suitability of silicone-coated release liners for self-adhesive labels, pressure-sensitive labels and other pressure-sensitive adhesive systems. It allows the release behaviour to be characterized under defined conditions and enables the comparison of different release coatings.

Application of FTM 10 Testing

Testing according to FTM 10 is used to determine the release force between a silicone-coated release liner and a defined pressure-sensitive adhesive system. The method provides a practical evaluation of the performance of release liners in self-adhesive constructions. It is particularly relevant for label materials requiring controlled release behaviour during converting, finishing or automatic dispensing processes.

Test Procedure and Details

In the FINAT FTM10 test, strips of a silicone-coated material are combined with a defined test adhesive or a standardized pressure-sensitive label material. The strips are applied to the test specimen and subsequently conditioned under defined conditions.

The specimens are initially conditioned for 20 hours at 23 °C under a pressure of 6.86 kPa (70 g/cm²) to ensure a defined contact between the adhesive and the release coating. Afterwards, the samples are conditioned for at least 4 hours under standard climatic conditions of 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity. Optionally, accelerated ageing may be performed by storing an identical set of samples at 70 °C for 20 hours, followed by reconditioning.

The specimens are cut into strips 25 mm in width and contacted under defined pressure using a FINAT standard pressure roller. Separation is carried out at a 180° peel angle and a speed of 300 mm/min using a tensile testing machine. Several measurements are taken from the central section of each strip and averaged to determine the characteristic value of the sample.

Relation to Other Label Testing Methods

The values determined according to FINAT FTM 10 are frequently evaluated together with other tests from the FINAT test programme in order to comprehensively characterize self-adhesive materials. In combination with release force testing, initial adhesion according to FINAT FTM 9 and peel adhesion according to FINAT FTM 1 "Peel Adhesion 180° at 300 mm/min" are particularly relevant.

Please feel free to request this test or obtain information about our complete FINAT testing programme.
