FINAT FTM 11 Testing subsequent adhesion

FINAT FTM 11 - Quality of silicone coated substrates for self-adhesive laminates: subsequent adhesion

We perform testing in our test laboratory according to FINAT FTM 11 to determine the subsequent adhesion of self-adhesive materials after contact with silicone-coated or otherwise release-coated materials. The test is used to assess the influence of release liners on the adhesion properties of pressure-sensitive adhesive systems. It enables the evaluation of whether release coatings are adequately anchored and properly cured and whether undesirable interactions occur between the adhesive and the release material.

Application of testing according to FTM 11

Testing according to FTM 11 is used to determine the subsequent adhesion of pressure-sensitive adhesives after contact with a silicone-coated release material. It provides a practical assessment of the quality of release coatings used in self-adhesive constructions. The test is particularly relevant for manufacturers of release liners, pressure-sensitive labels and self-adhesive laminates, as it provides information on the curing of the silicone coating, possible silicone transfer and the long-term functionality of the adhesive system.

Test procedure and details

In the FINAT FTM11 test, test strips are used that have previously been brought into contact with a silicone-coated material during testing according to FINAT FTM 10. In addition, a reference set of identical test strips that has not been in contact with the release material is tested.

The specimens are applied with the adhesive side onto standardized test panels and rolled down under defined conditions using a FINAT standard roller. Measurements are performed after contact times of 20 minutes and 24 hours under standardized climatic conditions of 23 °C and 50% relative humidity.

Subsequent adhesion is determined by means of a 180° peel test at a crosshead speed of 300 mm/min using a tensile testing machine. The results are reported as peel adhesion in Newton per 25 mm as well as percentage subsequent adhesion relative to the reference specimens. Additional observations such as Paper Tear (PT) or Adhesive Transfer (AT) are documented.

Relation to other label testing methods

The characteristic values determined according to FINAT FTM 11 are frequently evaluated together with additional tests from the FINAT test programme in order to comprehensively assess self-adhesive materials. A particularly close relationship exists with FINAT FTM 10 "Quality of silicone coated substrates for self-adhesive laminates: release force", as both methods jointly characterize the quality and functionality of release coatings.

For the interpretation of the results, the combined evaluation of both tests is of particular importance: low release force values according to FINAT FTM 10 combined with high subsequent adhesion values according to FINAT FTM 11 generally indicate a well-cured and uniformly applied silicone coating. In contrast, low subsequent adhesion values may indicate silicone transfer or insufficient curing of the release coating.
