At our test laboratory, we perform testing according to FINAT FTM 14 to determine the dimensional stability of self-adhesive films. The test is used to evaluate the dimensional change behaviour of pressure-sensitive films under defined test conditions. It enables assessment of whether self-adhesive films maintain their original dimensions during processing, storage and end use, while retaining high shape stability under climatic or thermal exposure.
Application of Testing According to FTM 14
Testing according to FINAT FTM14 is used to assess the dimensional stability of self-adhesive plastic films and film labels. It is particularly suitable for materials where dimensional accuracy and shape stability are essential for reliable processing and long-term performance. Typical applications include high-quality pressure-sensitive labels, graphic films, technical identification labels, vehicle graphics and self-adhesive functional films for industrial applications.
The test provides valuable information on the shrinkage and expansion behaviour of films and supports the evaluation of their suitability for applications requiring precise dimensional accuracy and long-term dimensional stability.
Test Procedure and Details
According to FINAT FTM 14, test specimens of defined dimensions are conditioned under specified climatic conditions or subjected to defined thermal exposure. Subsequently, dimensional changes are measured accurately in both the machine direction (MD) and the cross direction (CD/TD) and compared with the original dimensions.
The measured dimensional changes are typically reported as shrinkage or expansion in percent or millimetres. This allows both direction-dependent effects and material-related deformation to be evaluated reliably. The method provides an objective comparison of different film constructions with regard to dimensional accuracy and shape stability.
Relation to Other Film / Label Tests
The characteristic values determined according to FINAT FTM 14 are frequently evaluated together with additional tests from the FINAT test programme in order to comprehensively characterise the performance of self-adhesive films. Complementary investigations often include chemical resistance according to FINAT FTM 16 and FINAT FTM 17, as well as adhesion testing according to FINAT FTM 1 "Peel Adhesion (180°) at 300 mm per minute". The combination of these test methods provides a comprehensive evaluation of the mechanical, thermal and dimensional performance of self-adhesive films.
