Testing categories
We perform testing in our test laboratory according to FINAT FTM 16 for determining the chemical resistance of self-adhesive materials using the spot method. The test is used to evaluate the behaviour of pressure-sensitive labels, self-adhesive laminates and other pressure-sensitive adhesive systems when exposed locally to liquid chemicals. It enables the assessment of changes in the surface, print image and visual appearance under application-related exposure conditions.
Application of Testing According to FTM 16
Testing according to FTM 16 is used to assess the surface resistance of self-adhesive constructions to chemicals. It is particularly suitable for pressure-sensitive labels, film labels and self-adhesive plastic films whose surfaces may come into contact with cleaning agents, solvents, oils, fuels or other chemicals during service. The investigation provides important information on the suitability of labels for demanding applications, for example in the chemical, automotive, medical, electronics and consumer goods industries.
Test Procedure and Details
According to FINAT FTM16, defined quantities of the respective test chemical are locally applied to the surface of the test specimen. The chemical remains on the material for a specified exposure period and is subsequently removed. The specimens are then examined for possible changes.
As part of the evaluation, the test specimens are examined for colour changes, alterations of the print image, swelling, discoloration, surface damage, blistering and other material defects. Resistance is generally assessed by comparison with untreated reference specimens. Depending on the requirements, the type of test media, exposure time and test temperature can be adapted to the intended service conditions.
Relation to Other Tests for Labels
The characteristic values determined according to FINAT FTM 16 are frequently evaluated together with further tests from the FINAT test programme in order to comprehensively characterise the durability and functionality of pressure-sensitive labels. For investigating the chemical resistance of complete self-adhesive constructions, testing according to FINAT FTM 17 “Resistance to Chemicals – Immersion Method” can additionally be performed, in which the test specimens are completely immersed in the respective test medium.
Please feel free to request this test or obtain information about our complete FINAT testing programme.
