FINAT FTM 17 - Chemical resistance – Immersion method

We perform testing in our test laboratory according to FINAT FTM 17 for the determination of the chemical resistance of self-adhesive materials using the immersion method. The test is used to evaluate the behaviour of pressure-sensitive labels, self-adhesive laminates and other pressure-sensitive adhesive systems during prolonged contact with liquid chemicals. It enables the assessment of changes in adhesive performance, appearance and dimensional stability under application-related exposure conditions.

Application of Testing According to FTM 17

Testing according to FTM 17 is used to assess the chemical resistance of complete self-adhesive constructions. It is particularly suitable for pressure-sensitive labels, film labels and self-adhesive plastic films that may come into contact with cleaning agents, solvents, oils or other chemicals during service. The test provides important information on the suitability of labels for demanding applications, for example in the chemical, automotive, medical and consumer goods industries.

Test Procedure and Details

According to FINAT FTM17, test specimens are completely immersed in the respective test chemical for a defined period of time. After immersion exposure, the specimens are dried and subsequently evaluated with regard to their adhesive properties, visual appearance and possible dimensional changes.

The adhesive performance is determined by means of a peel adhesion test according to FINAT FTM 1 “Peel Adhesion (180°) at 300 mm per minute” before and after immersion. Peel adhesion is measured after a defined storage period under standard climatic conditions and compared with untreated reference specimens. The percentage loss of adhesion is calculated from the measured values and used to assess chemical resistance. In addition, recovery of adhesion can be investigated after further conditioning.

In addition to adhesion testing, the specimens are examined for colour changes, alterations of the print image, blistering, edge lifting and other material damage. Furthermore, dimensional changes after chemical exposure are determined and evaluated. Test parameters, particularly immersion time, temperature and the test media used, can be adapted to specific application conditions.

Relation to Other Label Tests

The characteristic values determined according to FINAT FTM 17 are frequently evaluated together with additional tests from the FINAT test programme in order to comprehensively characterise the durability and functionality of pressure-sensitive labels. For the investigation of surface resistance to chemicals, testing according to FINAT FTM 16 “Chemical Resistance – Spot Method” can additionally be performed, in which chemicals are applied locally to the material surface.
