FINAT FTM 2 Testing of Peel adhesion 90°

FINAT FTM 2 - Testing of Peel adhesion (90°) at 300 mm per minute for labels / adhesive tapes

We perform testing in our laboratory according to FINAT FTM 2 for the determination of peel adhesion (90° peel adhesion) of self-adhesive materials, pressure-sensitive labels and other pressure-sensitive adhesive systems. The test enables the evaluation of removability as well as the comparison of different adhesive formulations on paper, film or composite substrates. For manufacturers and converters of labels, pressure-sensitive labels, self-adhesive laminates and plastic films, this label test provides an important basis for product development, quality assurance and complaint analysis.

Application of FTM 2 Testing

Testing according to FTM 2 is used to evaluate the peel adhesion and removability of self-adhesive materials. In contrast to FINAT FTM 1, the test is carried out at a peel angle of 90°. This makes the method particularly suitable for comparing different pressure-sensitive adhesives and label materials with regard to their removability from defined surfaces. The test is especially relevant for pressure-sensitive labels that must be removed either cleanly or with defined peel forces. In addition, materials can be tested that would otherwise fail or tear under a 180° peel test.

Test Procedure and Details

In the FTM 2 test, the self-adhesive material under investigation is applied to a standardized test plate made of glass or other defined surfaces. After application using a standardized FINAT pressure roller, the test is performed after a dwell time of 20 minutes as well as after 24 hours.

Testing according to FTM 2 is carried out under standardized climatic conditions of 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity. The samples are peeled from the substrate at a speed of 300 mm/min and at a 90° peel angle. The peel force is reported as the average value in Newton per 25 mm (N/25 mm). In addition, failure modes such as cohesive failure, adhesive transfer, surface contamination or substrate failure are documented.

Relation to other tests for labels

The values determined according to FINAT FTM 2 are frequently evaluated in conjunction with other test methods from the FINAT testing programme. In addition to the determination of 90° peel adhesion, supplementary testing may include peel adhesion according to FINAT FTM 1 ("Peel Adhesion 180° at 300 mm/min") as well as initial tack measurements according to FINAT FTM 9.
