FINAT FTM 20 Fluorescence / whiteness

FINAT FTM 20 - Determination of Fluorescence and whiteness of polymer films, adhesive tapes

We perform testing in our laboratory according to FINAT FTM 20 for the determination of fluorescence and whiteness of label materials and other printed self-adhesive substrates. The test is used for the objective evaluation of the optical properties of papers, films and composite materials and enables the assessment of the effect of optical brightening agents as well as the visual impression of whiteness. It provides a reliable basis for comparing material quality, monitoring production processes and ensuring consistent optical properties as part of quality control.

Application of FINAT FTM 20 Testing

Testing according to FINAT FTM 20 is used to determine the whiteness and fluorescence of label materials and other printed substrates. It is particularly suitable for paper labels, coated papers, film materials and composite structures where a defined appearance of whiteness and consistent optical quality are required.

The test provides valuable information on the influence of Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs) on the visual appearance of a material. It supports manufacturers and converters in material development, incoming goods inspection, production monitoring and the evaluation of batch-to-batch consistency as well as ageing effects on optical properties.

Test Procedure and Details

According to FINAT FTM 20, test specimens are examined using a calibrated spectrophotometer or whiteness meter under standardized illumination and viewing conditions. The spectral reflectance characteristics of the material are measured both with UV illumination and under controlled UV-reduced lighting conditions.

Based on these measurements, the whiteness value and the fluorescence of the material are determined. Fluorescence results from the action of optical brightening agents, which absorb short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation and re-emit it as visible blue light. This optical effect causes the material to appear brighter and whiter to the human eye.

The test enables an objective evaluation of material differences, production variations and changes caused by ageing, UV exposure or variations in raw material composition. The results are suitable for quality control, incoming goods inspection and the comparison of different production batches.

Please feel free to request this test or obtain information about our complete FINAT testing programme.
