Testing categories
We perform testing in our laboratory according to FINAT FTM 3 for the determination of release force at slow peel (180° peel test) of self-adhesive materials, pressure-sensitive labels and other adhesive-coated systems. The test determines the force required to separate the release liner from the adhesive-coated face material and enables a predictive assessment of processing behaviour. Very low values may lead to unintended detachment during converting or dispensing, while high values can cause difficulties in matrix removal or in automated processing systems.
Application of FTM 3 Testing
Testing according to FTM 3 is used to evaluate the release and peel behaviour of self-adhesive constructions. It provides important information regarding processability in label production and application. The method is particularly relevant for pressure-sensitive labels and self-adhesive laminates where a defined separation behaviour between liner and adhesive-coated facestock is required.
Test Procedure and Details
In the FINAT FTM3 test, the force required to peel a self-adhesive material from its release liner (or vice versa) is measured at a 180° angle and a speed of 300 mm/min.
Prior to testing, the samples are conditioned for 20 hours under a load of 6.86 kPa (70 g/cm²) between flat metal or glass plates to ensure proper contact between adhesive and liner. Afterwards, the specimens are conditioned for at least 4 hours under standard climatic conditions of 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity.
The samples are cut from representative material, typically 50 mm wide and at least 175 mm long. At least three strips per material are tested. The strips are fully fixed to a test plate to allow a 180° peel configuration. During testing, the force is recorded at five points in the central area of each strip and averaged.
Relation to Other Label Testing Methods
The values determined according to FINAT FTM 3 are often evaluated together with other tests from the FINAT test programme to comprehensively characterize processing and adhesive behaviour of labels. In addition, tests for initial adhesion according to FINAT FTM 9 and peel adhesion according to FINAT FTM 1 "Peel Adhesion 180° at 300 mm/min" may be performed.
Please feel free to request this test or obtain information about our complete FINAT testing programme.
