Testing categories
At our testing laboratory, we perform testing according to FINAT FTM 6 to determine the resistance of self-adhesive materials to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The test is used to evaluate the weathering and ageing resistance of pressure-sensitive labels, self-adhesive laminates and other pressure-sensitive adhesive systems when exposed to UV light. It enables the assessment of changes in adhesive performance as well as visual changes resulting from controlled UV exposure using a light source with a spectral distribution similar to natural sunlight.
Application of FINAT FTM 6 Testing
FINAT FTM 6 is used to assess the UV resistance of complete self-adhesive constructions. The method is particularly suitable for pressure-sensitive labels, film labels, and self-adhesive plastic films intended for outdoor use or applications involving intensive light exposure. The investigation provides important information regarding the long-term durability of labels used in the automotive, chemical, medical, electronics, and consumer goods industries.
Test Procedure and Details
In accordance with FINAT FTM6, representative test specimens are exposed to defined UV radiation conditions. Radiation sources may include xenon arc lamps, mercury vapour lamps, or other light sources with a spectral distribution similar to natural sunlight. Exposure conditions are selected so that the total radiation dose corresponds to a defined period of natural weathering.
After exposure, the specimens are conditioned under specified climatic conditions and subsequently evaluated with respect to their functional properties. The assessment is based on the comparison of exposed specimens with unexposed reference samples.
The effects of UV exposure are determined using established FINAT test methods. These include peel adhesion according to FINAT FTM 1, "Peel Adhesion (180°) at 300 mm per minute", or FINAT FTM 2, "Peel Adhesion (90°) at 300 mm per minute", and initial tack according to FINAT FTM 9, "Loop Tack". In addition, the test specimens are visually inspected for discoloration, yellowing, and possible adhesive bleed-through.
Please feel free to request this test or obtain information about our complete FINAT testing programme.
