FINAT FTM 9 Loop tack measurement / testing

FINAT FTM 9 - Loop tack measurement

We perform testing in our test laboratory according to FINAT FTM 9 for the determination of the initial adhesion (tack) of self-adhesive materials, pressure-sensitive labels and other pressure-sensitive adhesive systems. The test enables the evaluation of instant adhesion and the comparison of different adhesive formulations on paper, film or composite substrates. For manufacturers and converters of labels, pressure-sensitive labels, self-adhesive laminates and plastic films, this label test provides an important basis for product development, quality assurance and complaint analysis.

At the accredited testing laboratory of FILK Freiberg Institute, such investigations are carried out on paper labels, film labels, plastic films, multilayer polymer composites and other flexible materials. The determined characteristic values provide important information on the processability and fitness for use of self-adhesive materials.

Application of FTM 9 Testing

Testing according to FTM 9 is used to evaluate the initial or instant adhesion of self-adhesive materials. It is particularly suitable for comparing different pressure-sensitive adhesives and label materials with regard to their "touch-and-feel" adhesion behaviour. The test is of particular importance for pressure-sensitive labels and labels processed in high-speed labelling lines or automatic dispensing systems.

Test Procedure and Details

In the FINAT FTM 9 test, a loop is formed from the self-adhesive material to be tested with the adhesive side facing outward. This loop is brought into contact with a standardized glass surface at a defined speed and is immediately removed again. The maximum force measured during separation characterizes the initial adhesion of the material and is reported in Newton.

Testing according to FTM9 is performed under standardized climatic conditions of 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity. Prior to testing, the specimens are conditioned to ensure reproducible and comparable results. At least five test specimens are evaluated and the mean value is reported. documented.

Relation to Other Label Testing Methods

The characteristic values determined according to FINAT FTM 9 are often evaluated together with other tests from the FINAT test programme. In addition to initial adhesion testing, peel adhesion tests according to FINAT FTM 1 "Peel Adhesion 180° at 300 mm/min" and cohesion measurements according to FTM 3 "Static Shear Adhesion" can be performed.

Please feel free to request this test or obtain information about our complete FINAT testing programme.
