Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists 128th International Conference

The Society of Leather Technologists & Chemists invites you to its 128th International Annual Conference in Glasgow from April 24–25, 2026. This two-day event brings together experts from leather technology, chemistry, research, and industry to discuss current developments, scientific findings, and practical innovations.

The conference will take place in the historic setting of The Royal College, while the traditional Dinner Dance will be held at the elegant venue, The Exchange. The program includes technical presentations, scientific papers, and networking opportunities, offering a comprehensive overview of industry trends and challenges. Registration for 2026 is now open.

We are delighted that Dr. Anke Mondschein will be representing FILK Freiberg at the SLTC conference in Scotland. In her presentation, she will demonstrate how previously unused keratin from hair—a byproduct of leather production—can be processed into a bio-based retanning and filling material.

Through partial hydrolysis and targeted chemical modification, the hair protein was processed on a pilot scale to partially replace conventional, non-biogenic components. Initial tests on leather and calculations of the product carbon footprint indicate a significantly reduced emission potential.

This approach opens up new avenues for using local biogenic raw materials more efficiently and making leather production more sustainable worldwide.
