Polymer synthesis and characterisation of polymer formulations

Innovative polymer development

The properties of polymers largely determine the utilisation properties of the materials produced from them.

If new properties are to be achieved or existing ones varied, promising methods include

  • targeted modification of the polymer structures,

  • development of copolymers,

  • the addition of functional groups and

  • transferring the polymers into dispersions.

These possibilities are suitable, for example, for realising a chemical coupling of special acrylate-based macromolecules with synthetic collagen peptides. The result is biocompatible polymers for applications in medical technology.

In addition to the classic laboratory equipment for polymer syntheses, two large laboratory reactors are available. With their help, a scale-up of the developed polymers is possible. The reactors can be coupled with an in-situ IR unit, which enables relatively precise monitoring of the reaction processes and optimisation of the reaction conditions.

The polymers are further processed with suitable additives into ready-to-use formulations. Before these are used in coating processes, extensive characterisation is usually required with regard to

  • Storage stability, particle size distribution (dispersions)

  • Rheological properties

  • Volatility or decomposition of components

Successful developments in the field of polymer synthesis and characterisation of polymer formulations include

  • Development of aqueous dispersions

  • Chemical bonding of functional units
