Our test laboratory conducts testing according to DIN 53340. This standard describes a method for determining the long-term folding behavior of less flexible types of leather. The purpose of the test is to assess how leather responds to repeated bending, providing insights into material fatigue and suitability for use. It is particularly applicable to leathers that, due to their thickness or stiffness, cannot be tested in a flexometer.
For testing according to DIN 53340, standardized specimens are first cut from the leather to be examined. Depending on the material type, the specimens are conditioned under defined climatic conditions to ensure consistent starting conditions. The specimens are then subjected to repeated bending cycles in a continuous-stress testing device (long-term folding test), where the leather is mechanically folded over a defined number of cycles.
