Our test laboratory determines preservatives in leather according to DIN EN ISO 13365-2 using an accredited test method. The test method determines the fraction of the preservatives TCMTB (2-(thiocyanomethylthio)benzothiazole), PCMC (4-chloro-3-methylphenol), OPP (2-phenylphenol) and OIT (2-octylisothiazol-3(2H)-one) that can be extracted from leather using an artificial perspiration solution. The method can also be used to determine corresponding degradation products.
In contrast to the determination of the solvent-extractable total content, DIN EN ISO 13365-2 uses an acidic artificial perspiration solution to extract the leather sample. Extraction is carried out for 24 hours at 37 °C. The preservatives transferred into the solution are then quantitatively determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using suitable detection.
The test thus enables an assessment of potential exposure to preservatives during the use of leather and is particularly relevant for leather products that may come into contact with the skin, such as footwear, clothing or accessories. If the solvent-extractable total content of preservatives in leather is to be determined instead, DIN EN ISO 13365-1 is used.
