Our test laboratory carries out tests according to DIN EN ISO 23702-1 in an accredited procedure for the determination of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in leather and leather fibre materials. The standard describes a chromatographic method for the quantification of selected PFAS compounds that may be present in leather and leather products, particularly due to water- and dirt-repellent finishing treatments or process auxiliaries.
The focus of the analysis is on the individual substances PFOS, PFOA, PFOSA, PFOSF as well as selected precursor and degradation compounds such as MeFOSA, EtFOSA, MeFOSE and EtFOSE. These substances are relevant across many industries due to their persistence, bioaccumulation potential and regulatory restrictions, and are subject to strict limit values or customer-specific substance requirements in many applications.
Test procedure
For testing, the leather sample material is extracted under defined conditions. The subsequent analytical determination is performed using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). This method enables selective and highly sensitive quantification of the listed PFAS individual substances, even at trace levels.
The test is used for leather, shoe upper leather, garment leather, upholstery and furniture leather as well as technical leather applications. It supports quality assurance, compliance with legal and customer-specific substance requirements, and the evaluation of finishing and treatment processes with regard to PFAS-containing components.
