Leather - Physical and mechanical tests - Determination of apparent density and mass per unit area

Our test laboratory performs accredited testing according to DIN EN ISO 2420 for the determination of the apparent density and mass per unit area of leather. Apparent density and mass per unit area are fundamental physical parameters of leather. Both values provide information regarding material structure, compactness, and construction and may be influenced by tanning, densification, or finishing.

Test Procedure

In the DIN EN ISO 2420 test, specimens of defined geometry are prepared and their mass is determined. In addition, specimen dimensions and material thickness are measured. Based on these parameters, mass per unit area and apparent density are calculated. Since leather is a naturally inhomogeneous material, several individual specimens may be required.

The test is used, for example, for automotive leather, upper leather for footwear, technical leather, and upholstery leather. In the automotive sector, mass per unit area is used, among other things, for the evaluation of lightweight material variants. These parameters are often assessed in combination with mechanical tests such as tensile, elongation, or tear strength testing.
