Testing methods
Our test laboratory carries out tests according to DIN EN ISO 3377-1 in an accredited procedure for the determination of the tear load of leather using the single-edge tear method. The test is applicable to all types of leather and is used to determine the force required to propagate an existing cut.
The test is used for the evaluation of leather for footwear, leather goods, apparel, upholstery leather and technical leather products. It is particularly relevant for components where cuts, perforations, seams or edge areas may serve as starting points for tear propagation.
Test procedure
For testing, standardized leather test specimens with a defined cut are prepared and conditioned. The specimens are then loaded in a tensile testing machine at a specified test speed. The force occurring during tear propagation is continuously recorded and evaluated as the tear load.
DIN EN ISO 3377-1 is frequently used in combination with other mechanical leather tests. These include, in particular, the determination of tear load according to DIN EN ISO 3377-2 (double-edge tear method), the determination of tensile strength and elongation according to DIN EN ISO 3376, as well as seam strength and flex resistance tests.
While ISO 3377-1 evaluates tear propagation from a single-edge cut, ISO 3377-2 uses a centrally positioned double-edge tear specimen and often provides more reproducible results, particularly for softer or lighter leathers. The combination of several mechanical tests allows a comprehensive assessment of the strength, durability and fitness for use of leather materials.
