Our test laboratory performs testing in accordance with the German quality guideline RAL 060 A2. This RAL agreement defines requirements for the correct designation and differentiation of leather from leather-like or non-leather materials. The aim is to ensure, through a clear material-based assessment, that the term “leather” is used exclusively for products made from animal hides through tanning, thereby guaranteeing transparent and standard-compliant labeling.

As part of the test, materials are specifically examined with regard to their microstructural and morphological properties. For this purpose, cross-sections of the samples are prepared and evaluated by light microscopy, with particular focus on the characteristic fibrous structure of collagen-based leather (a three-dimensional interwoven fiber network). Where necessary, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) may also be applied to clearly distinguish fine structural differences between leather, split leather, coated leather, synthetic substitute materials, and novel leather-like materials based on biopolymers. In addition, the layer structure and surface finish are assessed, particularly with regard to coatings or laminations. In the case of composite or multilayer materials, the entire layer structure must be evaluated.

The results of the test enable a clear classification of the material as leather or non-leather and form the basis for standard-compliant declaration according to RAL 060 A2. They are of central importance for quality assurance, product labeling, market surveillance, and, in some cases, complaint and failure analysis.
