The Toyota specification TSM 0503G describes a standardized test method for determining the fogging behaviour of non-metallic materials used in automotive interiors. The purpose of TSM 0503G is to evaluate volatile or condensable constituents released from materials at elevated temperatures, which may subsequently deposit as a film on cooler surfaces, particularly vehicle windows. The test is applied to a wide range of automotive interior materials, including leather, synthetic leather, coated textiles, plastics, foams, textile fabrics, composite materials and components.
Test procedure
In the test according to TSM 0503G, the specimens are conditioned in a closed test chamber under defined temperature conditions. During the test, volatile constituents evaporate from the material and condense on a cooled glass plate. The Toyota specification includes a reflectometric evaluation method, in which the reduction in the reflectance of the glass plate caused by the deposited condensate is measured. This ensures a reproducible assessment of the fogging behaviour and the contribution of the material to fog formation in vehicle interiors.
TSM 0503G is comparable to other fogging test methods offered by the FILK testing laboratory, such as DIN 75201, SAE J1756, as well as various OEM specifications from Volvo and other automotive manufacturers.
