Our test laboratory performs testing according to Volvo 85000150 to assess the soiling behaviour and cleanability of hard interior surfaces, coated fabrics and leather. The method evaluates both the susceptibility of a surface to defined types of soiling and the extent to which this contamination can subsequently be removed.
The test is particularly relevant for visible and frequently touched surfaces in automotive interiors. These include, for example, seat and trim surfaces as well as other interior components whose visual appearance should remain as unchanged as possible during regular vehicle use.
The method is directly assigned to the FILK testing field Soiling behaviour and cleanability. This field covers corresponding tests on leather, coated fabrics, plastics, elastomers and other surface materials.
Classification and related test methods
Volvo 85000150 belongs to the group of manufacturer-specific automotive test methods for assessing soiling, stain resistance and cleanability of interior surfaces. Comparable questions are also addressed by test methods from other vehicle manufacturers, in which the resistance of interior materials to defined contaminants and the effectiveness of subsequent cleaning are evaluated.
Within the Volvo test programme, there is a particularly close relationship with Volvo 85000145. Whereas Volvo 85000150 assesses the general soiling behaviour and cleanability of different interior surfaces, Volvo 85000145 focuses specifically on dye transfer from denim fabric to leather and coated fabrics.
Test procedure according to Volvo 85000150
The surface to be tested is exposed to defined test substances in accordance with the Volvo test specification. After the specified exposure period, the surface is cleaned under defined conditions.
The remaining contamination and any visible changes in the appearance of the surface are then assessed. Depending on the material and the specific test requirements, this may include staining, colour changes, changes in gloss or the general effectiveness of cleaning.
The method therefore enables a comparative assessment of the resistance and cleanability of different materials and surface systems used in automotive interiors. This is particularly relevant for light-coloured or visually demanding interior surfaces, where even minor contamination may have a significant effect on appearance.
