Sustainable, recyclable composites - New paths for technical textiles

FILK Freiberg Institute at techtextil, 23-26 April 2024 in Frankfurt, Hall 11.0/Stand B29

Flexible, polymeric composites are an integral part of our everyday lives. They can be found in the construction industry, in industrial applications, in agriculture, in transport and traffic and in countless consumer goods. The vast majority of these materials are based on the use of fossil raw materials for their production and they are rarely recyclable. There are many efforts to make the production of such technical textiles more sustainable, but usually only partial aspects are considered.

We are pursuing a holistic research approach for the development of sustainable and recyclable polymer composites. All technological and material aspects for the development of a closed material cycle and the sustainable production of flexible composites are considered in several sub-projects. The aim is to use our natural resources sparingly. This includes:

  • Use of bio-based raw materials from agricultural production residues

  • Increasing energy efficiency in manufacturing processes and technologies

  • Development of recyclable composite materials

  • Cascade utilisation of recycled materials

  • Development of biodegradable composite materials as an end-of-life scenario

  • Evaluation of the processes through a life cycle analysis (LCA)

The results are intended to show companies along the value chain for the production of flexible polymer composites ways in which they can develop a sustainable future for their industry and thus make their contribution to the UN's global sustainability goals.

What else?

As a specialist in flexible polymer materials, we have launched many new projects. Smart textiles and bio-based flame retardants are further key areas of research. Membranes and functional coatings for new drive technologies such as fuel cells are also included. Find out more at our stand in Hall 11.0, Stand B29.

Testing Driven by Science

The experts from our accredited testing laboratory will also be on site again. The range of services in the field of materials testing is constantly being expanded and now includes more than 1,200 tests, over 250 of which are accredited in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025. These in turn can be found in countless specifications from a wide range of industries. In addition, there are numerous special test procedures, damage and defect analyses as well as tests in accordance with legal regulations. This is why testing expertise begins with the selection of the right test method. With our comprehensive knowledge of materials and technology research, we give you the good feeling of being well advised.

Our test laboratory is also an approved test centre for many automotive factory standards and technical service A for the Federal Motor Transport Authority. As a member of the OEKO-TEX® Association, we are authorised to certify the entire OEKO-TEX® product range. Talk to us!
