Our test lab performs testing in accordance with DIN 53121 professionally and reproducibly in an accredited testing environment. The test is used to determine the bending stiffness of paper, cardboard, and paperboard using the so-called beam method, providing a key parameter for evaluating the mechanical performance of these materials.
In the test procedure, a strip-shaped specimen of defined dimensions is supported as a freely resting beam and loaded at the center with a perpendicular force. The applied force and resulting deflection are recorded, allowing the bending stiffness of the material to be calculated. Testing can be performed in both the machine and cross directions to capture direction-dependent properties.
Bending stiffness determined according to DIN 53121 provides information on the resistance of paper, cardboard, and paperboard products to deformation under load. It is applied to packaging materials, folding cartons, corrugated board, and technical papers, where stiffness, dimensional stability, and processability are critical quality characteristics.
At FILK laboratory, the method is also applied to plastic films, textiles, and leather.
