Testing of artificial leather and similar sheet materials - Flex cracking test

Material

  • Coated Textiles + Plastic Roll Goods
  • Plastics + Elastomers + Foils

Industry

  • Technical Textiles + Protective Equipment

Our laboratory performs testing according to DIN 53359 under accredited conditions – a long-term flexing test for synthetic leather and comparable sheet materials. The standard determines the resistance of materials to repeated mechanical stress as it occurs in practical applications, such as in the automotive, furniture, or apparel industries.

Test procedure

In the long-term flexing test, specimens are cyclically bent under defined climatic conditions. The aim is to detect and evaluate the formation of cracks, breaks, or structural changes caused by repeated deformation. The test is carried out on standardized specimens, which are mounted in a flexing device and repeatedly folded or bent under specified conditions. The number of flex cycles, test temperature, and load parameters are defined or set according to the respective requirements. During or after the mechanical loading, the specimen is visually and, if necessary, microscopically examined for cracking, delamination, or other changes, and the degree of damage is assessed.
