Our laboratory conducts testing in accordance with DIN EN 13130‑4 (Materials and articles in contact with foodstuffs – Plastics substances subject to limitation – Part 4: Determination of 1,3‑butadiene in plastics) competently and using an accredited procedure.
The test method defined by DIN EN 13130‑4 specifies a procedure for the quantitative determination of 1,3‑butadiene monomer in polymers that are intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. It is particularly applicable to polymers and copolymers such as acrylonitrile‑butadiene‑styrene (ABS) and high‑impact polystyrene (HIPS), as well as other 1,3‑butadiene‑containing materials that are soluble in or can form finely dispersed suspensions in N,N‑dimethylacetamide.

In this procedure, the residual monomer content of 1,3‑butadiene in the plastic is extracted and analysed, with results expressed in milligrams of 1,3‑butadiene per kilogram of polymer.

Testing to DIN EN 13130‑4 helps manufacturers and suppliers of plastic materials and articles intended for food contact to verify compliance with regulatory limits on residual monomer content. Accurate determination of 1,3‑butadiene levels supports material safety evaluations, quality assurance, and conformity with food contact legislation and industry requirements for plastics especially in contact with foodstuffs.
