Our test laboratory carries out tests according to DIN EN ISO 12945-2 in an accredited procedure for the determination of the propensity of textile fabrics to pilling, fuzzing and surface appearance change. The standard describes a modified Martindale method in which textile materials are subjected to defined rubbing actions in order to assess their performance during practical use.
Test procedure
For testing, the specimens are exposed to a specified number of rubbing cycles in a Martindale testing machine. Depending on the material structure, fibre type and fabric construction, repeated surface abrasion leads to the formation of fuzz and, where applicable, pills on the surface. After defined stages of wear, the specimens are visually assessed using standardized photographic standards and rating scales.
The test is used for upholstery fabrics, furnishing fabrics, apparel textiles, technical textiles and textile composite materials. It serves to evaluate service performance and to support quality control of materials with demanding surface durability requirements. DIN EN ISO 12945-2 is frequently applied in conjunction with abrasion testing according to DIN EN ISO 12947-2. While DIN EN ISO 12947-2 evaluates resistance to wear and material loss, DIN EN ISO 12945-2 focuses on the tendency of a material to develop fuzz and pills as a result of mechanical stress.
