DIN EN ISO 13937-2 Single tear test (accredited)

Textiles - Tear properties of fabrics - Part 2: Determination of tear force of trouser-shaped test specimens (single tear method)

Material

  • Textiles + Yarn

Industry

  • Technical Textiles + Protective Equipment

Our test laboratory carries out tests according to DIN EN ISO 13937-2 in an accredited procedure for the determination of the tear force of textile fabrics using the trouser tear method (single tear test). This standard replaces the former DIN 53859-2. ISO 13937-2 is used to determine the force required to propagate an existing cut in a textile material in a controlled manner. It is primarily applied to woven textiles and enables the assessment of resistance to tear propagation under tensile loading.

The test is used for technical textiles, coated textiles, upholstery fabrics and decorative fabrics. The resulting values provide information on the behavior of textile materials when locally damaged and are used to characterize their mechanical durability and fitness for use.

Test procedure

For testing, standardized specimens with a central cut are prepared, creating two legs (“trousers”). The two legs are clamped in the grips of a tensile testing machine and pulled apart at a constant test speed. The measured force corresponds to the force required to continue the propagation of the initiated tear. The forces occurring during tear propagation are continuously recorded and evaluated to determine the tear force.
