Our accredited laboratory performs testing in accordance with DIN EN ISO 16186 (Footwear – Potentially critical substances present in footwear and footwear components – Determination of dimethyl fumarate (DMFU)) competently and using a standardized procedure.

DIN EN ISO 16186:2021 specifies an analytical test method for the quantitative determination of dimethyl fumarate (DMFU), a chemical compound classified as a critical substance. DMFU may cause skin irritation upon contact and is therefore relevant for the health assessment of products, particularly those intended for close skin contact.

In the test procedure according to DIN EN ISO 16186, samples are taken from the material under investigation and extracted using suitable solvents. DMFU is then determined by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The standard describes both a standard method for simpler matrices and an extended procedure for complex matrices, such as materials with high sugar or fat content, which require additional clean-up and concentration of the extract.

Although testing in accordance with DIN EN ISO 16186 was originally defined for footwear and footwear components, the method for DMFU determination can also be applied to other materials and products in which dimethyl fumarate may occur as a contaminant and that are in close contact with the skin, such as upholstery materials or textiles.
