DIN EN ISO 17186 Leather layer thickness (accredited)

Leather - Physical and mechanical tests - Determination of surface coating thickness

Material

  • Leather + Leatherfibre Boards

Our test laboratory performs testing in accordance with standard DIN EN ISO 17186 using an accredited procedure. This standard specifies a standardized test method for determining the thickness of the surface coating layer (finish) of leather within the scope of physical and mechanical testing. The aim of the test is the quantitative determination of the applied coating or finish thickness, which has a significant influence on optical properties, haptics, and functional surface characteristics. The test results are also often required for material classification and correct labeling of leather (e.g. according to German RAL 060 A2, DIN EN 15987) or for defining test conditions in other examinations (e.g. aniline leather, coated leather). The standard is applicable to all types of leather as well as leather-based materials and products.

These parameters are particularly important for applications in which the coating thickness must be precisely adjusted and controlled, for example to ensure defined surface properties, wear resistance, or decorative requirements. The layer thickness is also an important parameter in quality control, material classification, and complaint or failure analysis.

During testing according to DIN EN ISO 17186, a cross-section of the leather is prepared perpendicular to the surface, and the thickness of the surface coating layer is then determined microscopically, preferably by light microscopy or, less frequently, by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The coating is not compressed during measurement in order to ensure accurate results. The determined layer thickness can be reported both as an absolute value and in relation to the total thickness of the material.
