Rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics - Determination of coating adhesion

Material

  • Coated Textiles + Plastic Roll Goods

Industry

  • Technical Textiles + Protective Equipment

Our test laboratory performs testing according to DIN EN ISO 2411 (which replaced DIN 53357) for the determination of the adhesion strength of coatings on textile substrates in an accredited procedure. The standard describes a standardized test method for determining the bond strength between a polymer coating (e.g. PVC, PU, or similar coating systems) and a textile or fibre-based substrate. The test is used to assess the quality, durability, and fitness for use of coated fabrics as used in numerous technical applications, including automotive interiors, interior design, technical textiles, tarpaulin materials, and coated fabrics.

The test is particularly suitable for evaluating:

• adhesion strength between coating and textile substrate

• bond quality of multilayer coating systems

• resistance to mechanical stress and peeling forces

• production and quality control of coated textiles and functional materials

• in our testing laboratory also failure analysis in cases of delamination, peeling, or layer failure during service

• assessment of the influence of aging, humidity, or temperature on bond strength

The method is intended for coated textile fabrics with a clearly defined coating layer. It is not applicable to uncoated textile materials or homogeneous polymer films without a supporting substrate structure.

Procedure of the Adhesion Test

In this test, a strip of the coated material is fixed onto a rigid substrate, while the coating is peeled from the carrier layer at a defined angle – typically 180°. The specimen is loaded in a tensile testing machine at a specified constant speed, while the force required for peeling is continuously recorded.

The standard defines, among other things:

• standardized specimen geometry and preparation

• defined peeling speed (typically around 100 mm/min)

• a 180° peel configuration for reproducible force application

• evaluation of mean peel forces as a measure of adhesion strength

In addition, specimens can be tested after climatic or hydrolytic preconditioning in order to evaluate performance under realistic service conditions.
