Our testing laboratory conducts testing according to DIN EN ISO 4047 (Determination of sulfated total ash and sulfated insoluble ash) expertly, using an accredited testing procedure.
This standard outlines a standardized chemical laboratory method for leather analysis, aimed at the quantitative assessment of mineral residues. The objective is to identify and characterize the mineral components in the material to provide insights into composition, potential contaminants, or effects of the tanning process.

The testing procedure primarily involves two key parameters:

Sulfated total ash – measurement of the total mineral content in the leather sample.

Sulfated insoluble ash – determination of the mineral fraction that remains in the material after a defined water extraction.

Laboratory testing principle: The leather sample is initially carbonized in an open crucible. The residue is then treated with sulfuric acid (sulfation), converting oxides and salts into stable sulfates. This minimizes losses from evaporation or thermal decomposition and ensures reproducible results, even during high-temperature steps. Finally, the sample undergoes complete ashing in a muffle furnace until no organic carbon remains.

This method is applicable to all types of leather and serves as an important foundation for quality control of chemical constituents. The measured ash values provide information on mineral contaminants, leather processing, and material properties, all of which are relevant to product quality, handling, and subsequent use.
