DIN EN ISO 4628-1 Coating failures (accredited)

Paints and varnishes – Evaluation of degradation of coatings – Designation of quantity and size of defects, and of intensity of uniform changes in appearance – Part 1: General introduction and designation system

Our test laboratory performs testing according to DIN EN ISO 4628-1 under an accredited procedure for the evaluation of coating defects, paint defects and uniform changes in appearance. The standard defines the rating system used to describe the quantity and size of coating defects as well as the intensity of uniform changes in appearance. It forms the basis for other parts of the ISO 4628 series, including standards for the assessment of blistering, rusting, cracking and flaking.

Test procedure

For the test, coated surfaces are visually assessed under defined lighting and viewing conditions. The size, quantity and distribution of defects present are classified using the standardized rating system specified in the standard. The assessment may be carried out on aged, weathered or otherwise exposed specimens and enables a reproducible description of surface changes.

Applications

The test is used for paints, coatings, functional surfaces and coated polymer materials. Typical applications include ageing and weathering studies, failure investigations, comparative evaluations of coating systems, and the documentation of surface changes following climatic exposure, contact with media, or service-related use.
