DIN EN ISO 5470-2 Abrasion (accredited)

Testing acc. to ISO 5470-2: Rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics - Determination of abrasion resistance - Part 2: Martindale abrader

Our test laboratory performs testing according to DIN EN ISO 5470-2 under an accredited procedure for the determination of the abrasion resistance of rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics. The standard describes a standardized Martindale abrasion test method for evaluating the wear behaviour of coated sheet materials under defined rubbing conditions. The test is used to assess the durability and serviceability of artificial leather, coated textiles and other flexible composite materials.

Test procedure

For the test, specimens are mounted in a Martindale abrasion tester and subjected to movement against a defined abrasive material under a specified contact pressure. The relative movement follows a Lissajous pattern, ensuring uniform and reproducible abrasion of the test surface. Depending on the requirements of the standard, abrasion resistance may be determined under either dry or wet conditions.

Evaluation is based on the number of abrasion cycles required to reach a defined endpoint, such as wear-through of the coating, the occurrence of specified surface changes, or other agreed assessment criteria.

Applications

The test is widely used for artificial leather, coated textiles, technical sheet materials, upholstery fabrics and automotive interior materials. It provides a realistic assessment of the abrasion resistance of coated surfaces and composite materials under controlled laboratory conditions.

In contrast to the Taber abrasion method, DIN EN ISO 5470-2 is based on the Martindale principle, employing a multidirectional relative movement between the specimen and the abrasive material. It is therefore particularly suitable for evaluating the abrasion resistance of coated textiles and comparable flexible materials.

The standard is referenced as the abrasion test method in EN 15618 for coated upholstery materials and in RAL-GZ 430-4. It is also relevant for automotive interior materials and is referenced, for example, in VDA 230-225 and Tesla TM-6001-05.
