Our test laboratory carries out tests according to DIN EN ISO 9073-2 in an accredited procedure for the determination of the thickness of nonwoven fabrics. The standard specifies a dedicated test method for both conventional and bulky nonwovens under a defined pressure and takes into account the specific characteristics of this material group. In contrast to DIN EN ISO 5084, which is applied to many textile sheet materials, DIN EN ISO 9073-2 is specifically designed for nonwovens and defines adapted sampling procedures, test pressures and measuring devices.
Test procedure
For testing, the specimens are conditioned under standardized climatic conditions and subsequently measured between a support surface and a pressure foot subjected to a defined load. The thickness is determined as the distance between the two measuring surfaces under a specified contact pressure. Depending on the structure and thickness of the nonwoven material, the standard describes different procedures for conventional and bulky nonwovens. Measurements are carried out on several specimens or at multiple measuring locations in order to obtain representative values for the material.
The test is used for technical nonwovens, filter media, hygiene nonwovens, geotextiles, upholstery waddings, insulation materials and other dry-laid, wet-laid or spunbond nonwoven products. Thickness is a fundamental material characteristic and is often determined together with other tests from the DIN EN ISO 9073 series, such as basis weight, tensile strength or tear resistance. For coated fabrics, DIN EN ISO 2286-3 is commonly applied.
