DIN EN ISO 9073-4 Tear Resistance (accredited)

Testing acc. to ISO 9073-4: Textiles - Test methods for nonwovens - Part 4: Determination of tear resistance

Our test laboratory performs testing according to DIN EN ISO 9073-4 as an accredited test method to determine the tear resistance of nonwovens using the trapezoid procedure. The method determines the resistance of a nonwoven to the propagation of an initiated tear and is therefore an important mechanical test for characterizing the strength of nonwoven materials.

The test is suitable for a wide range of nonwovens in the field of textiles and yarns. Materials can be examined in both the machine direction and cross-machine direction. The current standard also allows tear resistance to be determined in both the conditioned dry state and the wet state.

Testing according to DIN EN ISO 9073-4

A defined cut is made in the rectangular specimen and an isosceles trapezoid is marked on it. The non-parallel sides of the trapezoid are clamped in the grips of a tensile testing machine. As extension increases, the initiated tear propagates across the width of the nonwoven while the force required for tear propagation is continuously recorded.

Specimens are normally tested in both the machine and cross-machine directions. The maximum force occurring during tear propagation is determined for each specimen, and the mean of the valid individual results is calculated separately for each material direction. For testing in the wet state, the specimens are conditioned in water under defined conditions before testing.

Applications of the test

Tear resistance is particularly relevant when a nonwoven can be locally damaged by a cut, notch, perforation or other defect during processing or use. The test indicates how effectively the material resists further propagation of such an initiated tear.

DIN EN ISO 9073-4 can therefore be used to compare different fibre types, basis weights, bonding technologies and material constructions and to investigate directional differences in nonwovens. Typical applications include Automotive + Mobility, Furniture + Contract Furnishing and Technical Textiles + Protective Equipment.

Related tests

For other textile fabrics, FILK determines tear force using the trouser-shaped test specimen according to DIN EN ISO 13937-2. For rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics, tear resistance can be determined according to DIN EN ISO 4674-1. For plastic films, FILK also offers the trapezoid tear test according to DIN 53363.
