Testing categories
Our test laboratory performs testing according to DIN ISO 9352 as an accredited test method for determining the resistance of plastics to wear by abrasive wheels. The method characterizes progressive material loss or changes in a plastic surface caused by defined abrasive and scratching action. It can be applied to moulded specimens as well as suitable components and finished products.
The test is suitable for different rigid and flexible plastics and is particularly relevant to surfaces exposed to repeated friction and mechanical wear during use. Cellular materials and coatings are excluded from the scope of the standard. At FILK, the method forms part of the friction wheel method (Taber) within the physical testing portfolio.
Testing according to DIN ISO 9352
The specimen is mounted on a motor-driven turntable. Two abrasive wheels are brought into contact with the surface under a specified load. As the specimen rotates, the wheels produce a defined abrasive action while wear debris is removed during the test.
The abrasive wheel type, applied load and number of revolutions depend on the relevant material or product specification. Wear may be evaluated, for example, by mass loss, volume loss, changes in optical properties or the number of revolutions required to reach a specified level of surface degradation.
Applications of the test
Testing according to DIN ISO 9352 is suitable for comparative assessment of the wear resistance of plastics, elastomers and foils. Typical specimens include plastic sheets, moulded parts, technical polymer surfaces and components used in Automotive + Mobility applications.
The abrasive-wheel method can be used to compare different materials, formulations and surface finishes under reproducible mechanical loading. Since the results depend, among other factors, on the abrasive wheel and selected test conditions, comparative tests should be performed under identical conditions.
Related tests
For rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics, FILK performs abrasion testing according to DIN EN ISO 5470-1 – Taber abrader. For leather, the corresponding material-specific Taber method is available according to DIN EN ISO 17076-1. Coated fabrics can alternatively be tested using the Martindale principle according to DIN EN ISO 5470-2.
