Odour Testing According to Volkswagen PV 3900
Volkswagen PV 3900 specifies the sensory assessment of the odour of materials and components used in vehicle interiors. The test is intended to evaluate odour behaviour under defined conditions and is an important part of the quality assessment and approval process for automotive interior components.
The specification includes several test variants with defined conditioning conditions to allow the realistic evaluation of different materials and applications:
Variant 1: Testing at 23 °C for 24 hours
Variant 2: Testing at 40 °C for 24 hours
Variant 3: Testing at 80 °C for 2 hours
Variant 4: Testing of leather at 50 °C for 2 hours with the addition of water
Variant 5: Testing of leather at 50 °C for 2 hours without the addition of water
These different conditioning conditions enable the odour behaviour of various materials and components to be evaluated under application-relevant conditions.
Test Procedure According to PV 3900
The test specimens are prepared in accordance with the specification and placed in suitable test containers. They are then conditioned at the specified temperature to simulate the release of odorous substances under defined conditions representative of practical use.
The sensory evaluation is carried out by a trained assessment panel, which evaluates both the odour intensity and the odour character. The results provide a reproducible assessment of the suitability of materials and components for use in vehicle interiors.

Volkswagen PV 3900 is closely related to VDA 270 – Determination of the Odour Characteristics of Materials Used in Automotive Interior Applications. While VDA 270 is widely used as an industry-wide standard throughout the automotive sector, PV 3900 defines the specific odour testing requirements of the Volkswagen Group.
