Our laboratory performs testing in accordance with the German quality guideline RAL 061 A1. This RAL agreement defines designation rules and quality requirements for the classification of upholstery leather in the furniture sector. The aim is to enable a clear and binding classification of leather qualities and thereby ensure transparency and comparability with regard to structure, surface characteristics, and processing condition. The guideline is particularly intended to prevent misunderstandings and misleading claims in the marketplace and to ensure standard-compliant labeling of upholstery leather products.
As part of the evaluation, materials are examined with regard to their structure, grain characteristics, and the type and intensity of the surface finish. Particular focus is placed on the visibility and preservation of the natural grain, as this is a key criterion for classification into quality categories such as aniline, semi-aniline, or pigmented leather. In addition, the thickness and composition of surface coatings (see also DIN EN ISO 17186 in our portfolio) are analyzed, as they significantly influence both the optical and haptic properties as well as the classification itself.
For proper assessment, samples are prepared and evaluated both visually and microscopically in order to clearly identify the characteristic fiber structure of the leather as well as any coating or pigment layers. The objective is the unambiguous assignment to a defined quality class in accordance with the requirements of RAL 061 A1.
The results provide a reliable basis for quality assurance, product classification, and standard-compliant labeling of upholstery leather. They are particularly used in the context of material testing, supplier evaluation, complaint analysis, and conformity assessment, and contribute significantly to ensuring consumer transparency and consistent product quality in the furniture sector.
