SAE J369 Burning testing (accredited)

Flammability of Polymeric Interior Materials - Horizontal Test Method

Material

  • Coated Textiles + Plastic Roll Goods
  • Leather + Leatherfibre Boards
  • Plastics + Elastomers + Foils
  • Textiles + Yarn
  • Foams

Our test laboratory performs accredited testing according to SAE J369 (SAE International Surface Vehicle Standard) for determining the horizontal burning rate of polymeric interior materials. SAE J369 is intended for polymeric materials used in driver and passenger compartments.

Test Procedure

For the tests, the specimen is mounted horizontally and positioned at a defined distance from a standardized ignition flame. After a specified flame exposure time, it is observed whether and at what rate the flame propagates along the specimen. Typical result parameters include burning distance, burning duration, burning rate, extinguishing before reaching the measuring marks, or complete self-extinguishing behaviour.

The test is applied to vehicle interior materials such as seat covers, foams, carpets, headliners, films, leather, artificial leather, textile composites, and plastic components. Related test methods include ISO 3795, FMVSS 302, ASTM D5132, DIN 75200, GB 8410, TSM 0500G, and VCS 5031,19.
