Testing methods
Our test laboratory performs testing according to Volvo STD 1027,2713 to determine formaldehyde emissions from organic materials and components used in vehicle interiors. The method provides a quantitative assessment of formaldehyde release and enables different materials to be compared.
The test is particularly relevant for non-metallic materials and components used in automotive interiors. Formaldehyde may be released from various materials, coatings, adhesives or material composites and is therefore an important parameter in the assessment of interior emissions.
From a technical perspective, the method belongs to the FILK testing field Formaldehyde emission within the broader field of Emissions + Odour.
Classification and related test methods
STD 1027,2713 belongs to the Volvo family of standards for determining formaldehyde emissions from materials and components used in vehicle interiors. The later Volvo VCS 1027,2739 was introduced as a further development of STD 1027,2713 and replaced this version.
A particularly close methodological relationship exists with VDA 275 and the modified flask method described there. These methods specifically assess formaldehyde release and therefore differ from tests used to determine total organic emissions or individual volatile organic compounds.
Test procedure according to Volvo STD 1027,2713
Defined test specimens are placed in a closed test vessel (bottle method) above water and exposed to an elevated temperature. Formaldehyde released from the material is absorbed by the water and subsequently determined photometrically.
This enables the formaldehyde release of different materials and components to be compared quantitatively and assessed with regard to requirements for vehicle interior materials.
Further tests according to specifications issued by Volvo can be found on our Volvo page. An overview of Volvo and other vehicle manufacturers, associations and standardisation organisations is available under Tests by publisher.
