Our test laboratory performs testing according to Volvo STD 429-0002 for the quantitative determination of formaldehyde emissions from organic materials and components used in vehicle interiors as an accredited procedure. Typical test materials include plastics, foams, textiles, leather, coated materials and composite materials used in vehicle interiors.
The test is particularly relevant for non-metallic materials and components used in automotive interiors. Formaldehyde can be released from different materials, coatings, adhesives and composite structures and is therefore an important parameter in the assessment of interior emissions.
From a technical perspective, the method belongs to the FILK testing field Formaldehyde emission within the broader field of Emissions + Odour.
Classification and related test methods
STD 429-0002 is a further development of the former Volvo STD 1027,2713, which was replaced by STD 429-0002. In terms of its technical content, the standard conforms to VDA 275 and, like VDA 275, uses the modified bottle method.
A close methodological relationship also exists with Volvo VCS 1027,2739. Both methods are used for the quantitative determination of formaldehyde release from materials or components used in vehicle interiors.
Test procedure according to Volvo STD 429-0002
Defined test specimens are stored in a closed test vessel above distilled water at elevated temperature. The released formaldehyde is absorbed by the water and subsequently determined photometrically using the acetylacetone method.
The test result is reported in mg/kg relative to the dry mass of the material. This allows different materials and components to be compared quantitatively with regard to their formaldehyde emissions.
