Our test laboratory performs testing according to Volvo VCS 1027,2719 to determine the fogging behaviour of organic materials used in vehicle interiors. The test evaluates the tendency of interior materials to release volatile and condensable substances under the influence of heat, which may subsequently deposit on cooler surfaces.
Such deposits can occur particularly on vehicle windows and may impair their optical properties. Fogging behaviour is therefore an important quality criterion for materials used in automotive interiors. The test is suitable, for example, for films, coated fabrics, textiles, carpets and insulation materials.
The method belongs to the FILK testing field Fogging and thus to the broader field of Emissions + Odour.
Classification and related test methods
VCS 1027,2719 corresponds in its technical content to ISO 6452:2000. The Volvo standard comprises two test variants: Method F evaluates fogging reflectometrically, while Method G determines the amount of condensate gravimetrically. If no method is specified, Method F applies.
Closely related test methods include DIN 75201 and SAE J1756. Within the Volvo test programme, the older Volvo STD 1027,2711 is also relevant and likewise describes a reflectometric fogging test.
Test procedure according to Volvo VCS 1027,2719
The conditioned specimens are heated under defined conditions. Substances released from the material condense on a cooled surface.
In Method F, the deposit on a glass plate is evaluated reflectometrically by measuring the change in gloss. In Method G, the amount deposited on aluminium foil is determined gravimetrically.
The test therefore enables a comparative assessment of the tendency of different interior materials to form condensable deposits.
