Testing methods
Our test laboratory carries out tests according to VDA 230-211 in an accredited procedure. This VDA test specification describes the determination of the abrasion resistance of leather and coated textile materials for automotive interiors using a Martindale abrasion tester equipped with a ball plate. The method was specifically developed for seat upholstery and interior materials and, through the use of the additional ball plate, simulates localized pressure and friction stresses that occur during the practical use of vehicle seats.
Test procedure
For testing, the specimens are mounted in a Martindale abrasion tester and rubbed against a defined abrasive medium. In contrast to conventional Martindale procedures, the specimen is positioned over a ball plate, resulting in increased local deformation and stress on the material surface. After a specified number of abrasion cycles, changes such as wear, surface damage, breakthrough, gloss changes and alterations in appearance are assessed. The method is particularly suitable for evaluating the long-term durability of seat upholstery materials under realistic automotive interior service conditions.
VDA 230-211 is frequently applied in conjunction with other abrasion and durability tests. These include the Martindale abrasion test according to DIN EN ISO 12947-2 for textiles, the leather abrasion test according to DIN EN ISO 17076-2, on which the VDA method is based, as well as additional OEM-specific requirements for the evaluation of seat and interior materials. The combination of these tests provides a comprehensive assessment of the wear resistance and long-term performance of automotive interior surfaces.
