Our test laboratory performs tests according to VDA 230-226 to a high technical standard. The specification describes test methods and recommended quality requirements for coated textiles used on steering wheels and for complete steering wheels wrapped with these materials. It distinguishes between the material itself and the finished component and covers mechanical properties, ageing and resistance behaviour as well as emission and component testing.
Test methods according to VDA 230-226
Mechanical and physical testing includes DIN EN ISO 2286-3 – Thickness, VDA 230-218 – Scratch resistance and determination of elongation according to DIN EN ISO 13934-1 – Tensile properties. Further parameters include DIN EN ISO 23910 – Stitch tear resistance and DIN EN ISO 2411 – Coating adhesion.
Durability is assessed using methods including VDA 230-208 – Hydrolytic ageing and DIN EN ISO 32100 – Flex resistance. The programme also covers DIN EN ISO 11640 – Rub fastness, VDA 230-212 – Soiling and cleanability and DIN EN ISO 105-B06 – Hot-light ageing. Various cleaning and contact media as well as resistance to disinfectants are also considered.
Odour and emissions are evaluated using methods such as VDA 270 – Odour characteristics, VDA 277 – VOC emissions and VDA 278 – Thermal desorption analysis. For finished steering wheels, VDA 230-226 additionally includes climatic cycling, weathering and heat-ageing tests to assess surfaces, seams and bonded areas.
Further information is available in our overview of VDA tests and specifications and in the test laboratory overview with a search function for standards, specifications and testing services. For specific cases of material damage, we also provide support through failure analysis and material assessment.
