Testing methods
Our test laboratory performs testing according to Volvo 85000145 to assess dye transfer from denim fabric onto surfaces used in vehicle interiors. The test determines the extent to which dyes from denim material are transferred by mechanical contact onto leather or coated fabrics.
The test is particularly relevant for light-coloured seat covers and other visible surfaces in automotive interiors. Intensive denim dyes can cause clearly visible discolouration on light-coloured leather or artificial leather surfaces. Resistance to this type of denim soiling is therefore an important criterion in material selection, material development and quality assurance of seat and trim materials.
The method is assigned to the FILK testing field Soiling behaviour and cleanability. This field covers tests relating to soiling, dye transfer and the cleanability of different surface materials.
Classification and related test methods
Volvo 85000145 focuses specifically on dye transfer from denim fabric to interior surfaces. There is a particularly close relationship with Volvo 85000150. Whereas Volvo 85000145 evaluates dye transfer caused by mechanical contact, Volvo 85000150 assesses the more general soiling behaviour and subsequent cleanability of different materials and surfaces.
The test method is based on the Martindale principle and is therefore related to other mechanical methods for assessing soiling and surface interaction. Corresponding tests are grouped by FILK under Martindale method.
Test procedure according to Volvo 85000145
The surface to be tested is subjected to defined mechanical contact with denim fabric. The repeated relative movement between the denim fabric and the test surface simulates a contact stress typical of vehicle seats and other frequently touched interior surfaces.
After the mechanical exposure, the resulting discolouration or dye transfer on the material surface is assessed. In this way, different leathers, coated fabrics and artificial leathers can be compared with regard to their susceptibility to denim soiling.
The test therefore provides a practical assessment of the suitability of light-coloured and visually demanding materials for automotive interiors and complements other tests in the field of Soiling behaviour and cleanability.
