Foamed Leatherette -Materials Requirements
Material
Publisher
Our laboratory conducts tests according to the Volkswagen standard VW 50132. This technical specification defines the material requirements for synthetic leather and coated surface materials used in vehicle interiors. The aim of the standard is to evaluate and classify synthetic leather materials with regard to their functional, mechanical, and chemical properties as well as processability, ensuring their suitability for various interior components.
The standard covers a wide range of material classes, which differ by base material types, constructions, and additives (e.g., sustainable plasticizers).
Test requirements and parameters
VW 50132 specifies both general requirements for material quality and process behavior as well as concrete test parameters and tolerances. Key evaluation areas include:
Coating quality and surface structure
Basis weight and layer construction
Maximum tensile strength and mechanical performance
Conditioning of samples prior to testing
Resistance to thermal aging (heat exposure)
Adhesion of the coating to the substrate
Stain behavior and resistance to external influences
Hydrolysis testing to assess chemical long-term stability
For each quality class, corresponding limit values and requirements are defined and applied during evaluation.
Significance of results
Values and classifications determined in our laboratory according to VW 50132 provide a reliable basis for material selection, component design, supplier approval, and quality assurance in automotive interior applications.
