OEKO-TEX ® Chemical and Material Testing

The tests carried out according to OEKO-TEX® in the accredited testing laboratory of FILK Freiberg Institute gGmbH comprise a broad range of analytical and material-related investigations for the evaluation of product safety, absence of harmful substances and fitness for use. The laboratory testing services are aimed in particular at companies in the textile, leather, plastics and coating industries and support the assessment of materials, auxiliaries, coatings and finished products with regard to current regulatory and market-related requirements.

The tests support companies in complying with internationally recognized requirements and provide an important basis for OEKO-TEX® certifications.

The laboratory tests make an important contribution to quality assurance, material compliance, sustainability and product safety throughout international supply chains. Manufacturers, brands and suppliers benefit from reliable restricted substance testing, chemical material analytics and standardized test methods for consumer products, skin-contact materials and technical applications.

Main testing categories include in particular:

Restricted substance and residue analyses

Tests for bisphenols (e.g. bisphenol A, S or F), solvent residues such as DMF, NMP, DMAc, benzene or formamide, as well as volatile organic compounds, enable the assessment of possible emissions and material-related contamination. In addition, chlorinated benzenes, chlorinated toluenes and chlorinated phenols are analyzed.

Testing for prohibited or regulated substances

These include analyses of brominated, phosphorus-containing and boron-containing flame retardants, organotin compounds, UV stabilizers as well as medium-chain and short-chain chlorinated paraffins.

Formaldehyde, emission and environmental analytics

The quantitative determination of free and partially releasable formaldehyde is an important part of material assessment. Additional testing includes emissions and volatile substances as well as other emission-relevant compounds.

Dye, pigment and arylamine analyses

The investigations include allergenic or carcinogenic dyes and pigments as well as arylamines from azo dyes. These include prohibited azo dyes, 4-aminoazobenzene and quinoline.

Heavy metal and elemental analyses

The investigations cover both extractable heavy metals and total contents of selected elements such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, chromium or mercury.

Testing for fluorinated and organic specialty compounds

These include analyses of per- and polyfluorinated compounds (PFC/PFAS), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), siloxanes, phenols as well as alkylphenols and alkylphenol ethoxylates.

Material and performance properties

In addition to chemical investigations, material-related functional properties are also evaluated. These include colour fastness tests such as perspiration fastness, rubbing fastness, water fastness and saliva fastness.

Product-specific special tests

Additional analyses include tests for process preservatives, pesticide residues, plasticizers (phthalates), azodicarbonamide (ADCA), chromium(VI) and selected additives.
